Declaration of Independence is adopted in Philadelphia.
July 4, 1776
Members of the Second Continental Congress approve the Declaration of Independence in Freedom Hall and order it printed. While most likely signed by 50 of the eventual 56 signatories on August 2, 1776, there is no contemporary account of John Hancock signing it in large letters so King George can read it “without his spectacles.”
